Hydraulic tappet noises are usually caused by the tappets gumming up. It is often dealt with by using fully synthetic oil, which will gradually do away with the gummy deposits and prevent them recurring.
However, there are oil additives sold which are supposed to help this process, but I have never needed to try them. Just using fully synth, and doing the occasional "Italian tune-up", has done the trick for me. (That's driving for a few miles at 3,500 to 4,500 rpm once the engine has warmed up). Try it.

I might blast some tappet additive in, do a Forte flush and even do a diesel flush. I've found a mix of diesel and oil to be a very effective way of breaking down internal gunk.

Pretty sure the oil filter is in the same place on all 2.0 versions as it is the same engine. 138bhp version. It never got the more powerful 180 as fitted to the GTi hatch.

Yes, I expect the additive is mostly kerosene (aka paraffin), which is similar to diesel.Skezza wrote:I might blast some tappet additive in, do a Forte flush and even do a diesel flush. I've found a mix of diesel and oil to be a very effective way of breaking down internal gunk.

I've done oil + diesel flushes before. It does genuinely work, and I prefer it to the wynns stuff for example. You say it's paraffin, but i've heard of ethanol also being used, which provides no lubrication. At least with diesel, you're getting a thin film of lubrication over your bores etc.IanL wrote:Yes, I expect the additive is mostly kerosene (aka paraffin), which is similar to diesel.Skezza wrote:I might blast some tappet additive in, do a Forte flush and even do a diesel flush. Seeing as this is well overdue (12,000 miles since the change), I'll do an intensive 50/50 diesel to oil flush. I would have preferred to do a topside oil change, but needs must and I think when dropping gunk and nastiness doing a drain is perhaps a better option. Also I don't know how accessible the filter is without getting it on at least some stands.
I'll perhaps do a second oil change within a few weeks or so. Just to get any last gunk out of there.
