Has anyone tried the Shell Optimax unleaded petrol? Is there any benefit with this? Just wanted to know is it worth the effort going to find a Shell petrol station or just stick to the cheapest? Cheers

If you can afford it (and it doesn't add much per tank) then go for it. It's proven to keep the valves clean (and even clean them after they've been gunked up with NUL) -- see last month's Evo magazine (or was it the month before?).

I run the Scoob exclusively on it. Seems to go better and give about 10% more MPG too. The CC will be running on it when we get round to ordering it ;)

Because of the way the cleaning action works, though, once you've run on Optimax for a while and you put in a tank of NUL you'll find it's no worse. Then you'll think "why am I paying the extra?". Then you'll put in NUL for a while and then when you next put Optimax in you'll get a sudden improvement

Mvoong,

I never use Shell petrol, not since their last additive 'improving' petrol mucked up car engines (mostly Vauxhalls). Reason being is, should the engine go bang, I don't want the chief monkey at Peugeot say 'it's not our fault it's the petrol you put in it' and a slanging match pursues and my car sits in a garage. I know this is very unlikely and I'm sure Shell has got it right now, but I'm not risking it. Just my 2 penn'ith worth.

To add my two pennorth: Have tried Optimax in both my Galaxy 2.3 and my Bandit 1200, couldn't detect any difference whatsoever apart from a slight lightening of the wallet  !

Will probably try it in the CC too, 'cuz I'm a sucker

I haven't used Shell since they made a disparaging ad about bikers  TRUE!

Have used Optimax and do notice a difference engine revs smoother, better pick up + slight improvement in mpg. Don't use it exclusively thou depends how flush/skint I am at the time. Do try and fill a full tank when I use Optimax otherwise you won't really notice an improvement. Try it, don't think it can do you car anyharm has it has a higher octane content than normal unleaded which means the burn is less harsh on your engine.

I used Optimax on my old car. Much better than standard unleaded. Never try it on the Pug yet.

thx for all the replies...I guess the only way I'll found out is to just try it and see. BTW the local Shell garage here(Stenhouse/Edinburgh) has it for 71.9p/litre and was interested to know if there is anywhere cheaper.

michael,

try http://www.petrolbusters.com

shell maybury and bowmac (round from tesco, corstorphine) are 71.7 for u/l.

only the supermarkets are any cheaper at 71.4 but you won't get optimax there.

I will have to decline to comment on this - working for a rival oil company .

But remember for those of us in the Edinburgh /Grangemouth areas , that a certain green oil company sell a sulfur-free ulp and diesel product - which is a whole lot better for the environment .
