I asked Peugeot Charters the very same question - they said Esso semi-synthetic. About £27 for 5 litres

I thought you shouldn't mix types - esp mineral with synthetic. Dunno about top-ups? I was told (on my aging bike that is) that changing from one to the other was an oil filter change as well - is that right?

I've used Castrol Magnatec 10W 40 to top up, had it on special offer at Halfords some time ago. Haven't experienced any problems. It's had good reviews from the motoring press/public.

Yep, you shouldnt mix mineral and synthetic oils. Mainly cos they wont mix... think water and oil... Ok, that doesnt mean one is oil and the other is water...

In general you can go from mineral oil to synthetic but not the other way round. The engine will get used to the lovely synthetic stuff and won't cope with the sudden change to the 'rubbish' mineral oil. You should only top up with the same type oil your engine has already and only change when you completely drain out the old stuff. Hope that helps.

BTW-My study is in engine oils so I reckon I know a bit about the stuff, just don't get me talking technical stuff.

noticed something weird
2 identical cars
206cc S 1.6
i only put synthetic oil
and the other car uses standard oil
mine always has the oil temperature around 110
the other one with the standard mineral oil is around 90 all the time
i.e the standard oil is at a lower temperature
how come?
should i use standard oil then?
