Help !!!! problems with an amp

my brother in law has just bought a new amp and he's having some problems so I said I'd post here. Basically we 've plumbed it in correctly but after 3 seconds all sound from the sub it powers goes dead. It's as if the amp is losing power ... but we know that not to be true.
any advice ?

i had the same problem with my amp, and what happened is that the coil on the sub was open, so, sometimes it sounded and couple of seconds later it went dead, after i changed the sub, the amp worked fine.

thanks Juan ... we went down that line of thought as well, but tried the amp with several different speakers / subs and still the same results.

looks to be duff amp. going to take it back tomorrow and replace it and see what happens !
