I've done 29,550 miles on the same set of pads. Today I had the scariest cc moment when my brakes did some weird not-working thing, I braked moderately on a bend and the car did not slow down but I jumped into the left lane, subsequent braking caused the car to pull left and I was receiving very little braking power.
Car went in, apparently the pads needed changing - but for this to happen so suddenly concerns me a little. I would estimate that at 40+ mph, the car had 10% of its normal braking power. I could not brake hard as the car veered left.
I can't tell if the new pads have fixed it completely as they're still bedding in. To top it off, the front & rear tyres have been swapped over (after 10K miles wear on the front !) so the ride is very different.
Anyone else experience this ?

You're right. Even scarier that they just went. You expect brake performance to be impaired as the pads wear low, metal on metal with my Astra once - the car still stopped ! All my other cars squeaked like buggery until I got around to changing them. On the rover there is a metal protrusion that rubs on the disc when the pad wears down causing the brakes to squeel.
I can't believe Peugeot have not put anything in place to alert the driver that the brakes are so low. Get them checked at your first service (20,000 mile service).
