They may not do. However, if the engine blows up they are quite within their rights to refuse to repair or replace it if the warranty conditions haven't been met.
After all, they are expected to pay for any fault found in their product. Why is it unreasonable for them to insist that they maintain it?
What they charge for that maintenance is a seperate issue.
Also, comparing a manufacturer's warranty on a £16k car with a warranty on a £500 washing machine is quite meaningless.

The dealer network serves a purpose and provides a sevice to all car owner. Would you trust a independant to repair a leaking roof? Dealers need income form all servicing repairs to maintain that service. The dealers should have the specialist knowledge tools etc to ensure thay are capable of any repair. We know that they do not always live up to the standard expected but the fewer cars the dealer services and repairs the higher the cost is likely to be to those who would like to maintain there warruntee in case of any faults with the vehicle
