Yes - you have a point there.

But I have never know a particular problem like this affect so many individual owners.

Plus the fact that the problem returns so quickly after it is solved. This must surely mean that there is a fundamental problem with the braking system somewhere.

My local monkeyman explained thusly:

The problem is the new material in the brake pads. It now contains no asbestos and is harder - this means it glazes over quite easily. It's this glazing that causes the squealing.

The fix is to deglaze the pad. However, the pad will just glaze over again.

Pug are allegedly currently researching other materials in order to find a suitable replacement that doesn't glaze & squeal.

That's what I argued.

Peugeot insist it's the substance they use to replace the asbestos in the break pads.

Asbestos has not been used in break pads for a number of years now, so it seems strange that my past Vauxhall, Citroen and Renault (all brand new cars) never had this problem.

Even my sister's peugot 106 Quicksilver doesn't have the problem....

...Peugeot claim they use a different compound in the 206 that causes squeak.

They are 'investigating it'......

Well...they claimed that the reason for my squeaking brakes is I have a dodgy break calliper on the rear, which has caused abnormal wear (90% wear on right and 10% wear on left), okay so this might be the case, but it is my front breaks which squeak, once work has been done, I will put this query forward!

I live on the coast in Spain and was told the squeaky brakes were due to the salty air! (A very dodgy excuse given that I never heard any other car squeak like that) It became unbearable and after the 2nd attempt they seem to have been fixed under by my dealer under warranty.

I've just had my 206 2 months and brakes started squeaking badly after one month! I took it into my local dealer (Warwick Wright in Brentford) on Monday. The mechanic didnt have to drive my car off the garage coz as soon as he braked he said, yep, they were bad!! They've replaced my brake pads and now no noise!! It's heaven! Hope it lasts!! They gave me the story of dust and also the reason that they dont have the asbestos anymore, bla bla bla. But he did admit that it shouldn't have been squeaking as badly as it was doing after only 1100 miles!! I didn't have to pay but I know they were querying this so sending the info to Peugeot and I guess they will try to charge me if Peugeot dont want to pay up!!

If they try and charge you, ask for a written confirmation that the brakes are designed to squeal after 1100 miles. If they won't do that, you can refuse to pay as they are admitting it's a fault. If they do write the letter (highly unlikely), you can take it to Trading Standards and make a complaint that you weren't informed of that before you bought the car.

Well I happen to have a friend who is a mechanic, and he is adamant that the squeak is coming from the "calipers"; which is caused by Peugeot being too tight to bother greasing them properly. I suppose this may explain why they squeak even when you are not pressing hard??

Mine have just developed the squeak, so I am going to shortly let him loose with the brakes and will let you know if this works.

Disclaimer: "calipers" may not be correct term, I am a girl and don't entirely know what he was going on about!

Calipers is the correct term but that's not the cause. If it were, it wouldn't make any difference when new pads were fitted or old pads were deglazed.

i could just see my dealer coming back saying to me that you have to pay because pug won't - i think two words starting and ending in "f" would be the answer :P
