Unrequired Ashtrays

Hi All.

I've noticed that the ashtray is remarkably easy to remove. As a non-smoker who will not be allowing anyone to smoke in the car (and even if they did, they certainly wouldn't be allowed to use the ashtray), is there a fitting I can get that will allow me to remove the ashtray and leave a nice little flat surface where it currently sits?

It would make an ideal spot for stashing my mobile phone while I'm driving or in fact other bits and pieces.

u can put ur mobile behind the ashtray if it's small enough.

i also believe u can get a can holder to replace it.

i use the ashtray for keeping a bag of coins in for car parks etc..

it always has a use

i used to put my mobile in the little gap behind the ashtray, til i noticed how hot it gets there after a long journey.......now it sits in the door pull-to, where it just gets dripped on when i open the window

Derek, at the moment, I do put the mobile behind the ashtry but it is a Nokia 7650 which, although not huge, is certainly not the smallest of mobiles. It fits in there perfectly but if I get a call it is not very easy to pick up in a hurry due to the tight fit. Yes, it does get very hot

Probably something to do with that powerpack under the ashtray I imagine.

cc_tim, I used to put mine in the door pull and it also would get wet

The thing is, I have the music up so loud that when it rings, I don't hear it. This is why it sits behind the ashtray at the moment. The screen lights up really bright as its a full colour display and down there I can easily see a call come in (which I can't when its in the door pull) rather than hear it. Also, having it in the door pull means that if you drive a little bit hastily (as I sometimes do

) it gets thrown out onto the floor. This could be due to the larger size of the phone though.

This cup holder sounds like a good option. Where can I get one and does anyone have a pic of it?? I'd open the ashtry and stand the mobile up in that but the inside would scratch it so I just want a good alternative.

Have a proper built in Phone kit,that way you wont be breaking the law.

Im sorry if i sound lie a moaning old twat,but this is a issue i feel strongly about,gets on my tits when you see people with nice cars but still they cant afford a hands free kit.

Have got them in my 2 cars and works van,you never miss a call as they turn the sounds down automaticly and the line is better as the tax disc holder is also the ariel,so strong signal wherever you are.

theres nothing illegal about driving while on your phone yet, its just downright dangerous....

the handsfree kits that just plug straight into your phone should come provided with any phone you buy IMHO, and it should be illegal not to use them - i personally use it all the time when im not driving, as I like my brain the way it is, and not fryed!

has anyone found a mobile holder that they can put in the CC successfully? I dont like the ones that clip onto the air vents, and I can seem to find a flat surface for a suction one.....

Here in Oz it is illegal to drive and use the phone without a car kit.

As for the cup holder, Trung bought one from Peugeot and he was very disappointed. It's apparently not very deep and from his comments a waste of time.

there is a cup holder in the glove box anyway ... oh and for your information ... slush puppy cups fit nicely in the door

and can last 100's of miles before melting

anyway, back to the ashtray... i find it usefull to store my chewing gum wrapper

What about smokers?

There's no law (yet) specifically banning the use of mobile phones (or even requiring both hands to be on the wheel). The bill is planned and will apparently result in only installed hands-free kits being legal. This means a kit which is permanently wired in (with speaker & mic), not just one of these that fits on a vent (or similar) and uses a headphone.

i can afford a hands free kit quite easily but don't think my use of the phone in the car justifies the expense. i guess it's different for yourself when you probably use the phone a lot when driving.

i also think smoking is more dangerous than using a mobile - at least a mobile can't set the car on fire

I have a 7650 as well but there is no car kit for it yet which is a pain. it also fits perfectly in the small compartment behind the handbrake, but you can't see it there, and I too tend to have the radio up too loud to hear the phone!!!

Peugeot now fit a Bluetooth hands-free kit for Â£300. If you get that installed, it doesn't matter what phone you have as long as it's got Bluetooth (which the 7650 has).

Everything's hands-free & (I assume) voice-activated so you can leave your phone in your pocket/bag/boot - only problem being it wouldn't be being charged.
