You take the row pointed out to you and then lay it out vertically, usually in the first 3 columns.

When the next row's pointed out (containing a maximum of 3 cards from the first row), you lay that one vertically, usually in the first column.

The row pointed out to you will have the selected card in the first position.

If you have a decent memory (or using a computer), you can use other columns so it's not as obvious.

Well Alex's solution is a solution so it's sort of out the bag really!

Of course there may be others but once you're seen one solution the magic has sort of gone.

I know how to do the magic 21 card trick, the 3 rows of 7 are the important bit, when the person says which row their card is in, gather them into the rows horizontally, one on top of the other so you will have three piles, gather them all together and make sure the pile containing thier card is put in the middle then lay them out again, once again place the pile with their card in the middle, lay them out for a third and final time, do the same again then count out the cards, their card will be the 11th one.

Er, yes, as Alex's solution is based on a numbers problem. If you have 3 choices which you make 3 times then there are 27 (3 x 3 x 3) possible choices and in this example you have 21 cards. Alex doesn't have to look at the face values of his cards in his solution. You're card will be the leftmost one in the row you finally select. As he said though it's a bit obvious to the person picking.

There's other ways to do it too based on encoding. I notice that there is never 2 cards with the same number and colour i.e never the 8 of clubs AND spades. So it's 21 cards from a deck of 26 (13 black, 13 red), not 52. You could encode 26 possible cards (well 21 in this case) in your 27 possible choices. But that would require you to layout the cards 3 times in a very specific way to tell them apart. So you'd have to remember this specific layouts.

Still, I'm sure there are other ways!

I guess my question would be - Does the choice of row effect the layout of the cards on the next layout (yes for Alex's, no for mine)?
