Does anyone know if the standard head unit can be muted when using a mobile phone car kit?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any standard telephone mute wire like most aftermarket headunits do.

You might be able to do some weird wiring by figuring out what the pins do on the CD changer socket (assuming you don't have a CD changer!) - with a bit of luck you could get the radio to switch to CD changer, thus muting it. Not great though!

Alternatively you can mute it manually by pressing volume up and down buttons simultaneously on the steering wheel control.

assuming yours an RD3,
looking at the back of the head unit, you have 3 row
look at the bottom row left of the fuse
(like this : : : : ) pin on the left top corner is the signal mute

The mute works fine on the pin mentioned above all you have to do is connect something that supplies a ground signal to this pin.

I have a nav unit connected to this pin and it works great apart from a slight delay in the radio muting after the signal is supplied.

bluetooth carkit, basically you got ones which has it own speaker and ones which uses the car existing, each company come out with their own bluetooth kit but any will work fine. Try having a look at 'parrot ck3000' (it has a standard iso plug connect car to unit, from unit back to cd) if you have an ericson handset combine with this would make a truely handfree unit.
