I think that they're always cheaper from DVLA (http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/) but I've never bought one so someone else may be able to correct me!

The DVLA is the best place to by one :D
I have a pp and the cost of the plate and the transfer fees are all in with the price and is so easy to change it over, you just go to you local DVLA office and its done in about 10 min with no fuss.
There web site has all the information and examples of the type you are looking for.

ohh and what does Acrylic plates mean? they different from normal ones? cuz on most sites you pay more for 'Acrylic' plates and you can cusomise them further with a choise of borders etc...or are they all 'Acrylic?

Boo hiss wish i'd got my plate off DVLA..........

Hang on, i did :D so i'm gonna tell em i want some money back since they charged me more than Lyndon!

a lot of the other sites just offer the same plates as DVLA, but obviously they have to play fees and add a profit etc, so they are ALWAYS more expensive. The only reason for buying anywhere other than DVLA is if the plate is already issued and you are after something very specific. If you only want your initials i dont think you should ever pay more than £250

I would think all plates are made from acrylic. Fancyplates charge about £33 for a pair of plates with a nice border delivered by the way, spaced as legally or otherwise as you desire :D :D :D :D :D :D

lol - fancy plates as in the company that supplies the plates with the borders, rather than acrylic plates being 'fancy'! ;)

My plate was £500 all in with DVLA :D
I hope you get the plate you want :D
Please take note that you can not change the style of the letters (font) of the plate and that you will only be able to have a GB or Euro badge on the side with the makers name at the bottom.
When i had my plates made up at Halfords i asked for different letters (font) and to have a name put at the bottom and was told that it was not allowed by law now to do this.
I think the DVLA web site will help.

So you can't even have a name put at the bottom? I didn't realise the law went that far :(

I chose one from the DVLA website, but it would be pointless unless I could space the letters differently so didn't bother.

Sorry Esselle  no you can't.
The plates that came with my car had 'warrick wright holloway' at the bottom of the plate, i asked Halfords to put my name at the bottom of my new plate and was told you cant do that any more and that you have to have the name of were the plate was made up.
Halfords do a logo that does not stand out like most of the plate makers.
I think the dealers must have there own number plate service (in house) which is why they can have there name and location placed on the bottom of the plate.
I know that we see alot of number plates that have the screw placed to make another latter or number but this is not within the law and the police can stop you and i think they can fine you and request that the plate be changed.
My new plate is SL 53 GFL if you see me around dont forget to
