Does anybody know if the bootlid handle bars serve a purpose?

eg: do they give rigidity to the bootlid or are they purely quirky French styling?

Part of me has been wondering how the car might look without them.

And then another of my multiple personalities wonders whether they'd look any good if they'd been chromed. - Yes, I'm (we're) schizo !

Any comments ?
(preferably on the handle bars, ie: not re: my conflicting personalities)
Cheers,
Michael

As far as I know they're there to put a boot rack on.

The boot rack is chrome and gives you more luggage space however I read somewhere than you can't put the roof down with one on.

Presumably you'd have to put your roof down then load your boot rack.

Maybe one of you !!!!!!! could invent chrome handle bars - patent the design and make a small fortune !!
