Could it be only newer headunits (as in last year or two) play CDRWs? I'm sure I tried with my CC and it refused to play any...

i'll have to have a play around because until i get my autochanger i only have the HU!!!

I have no problems with CD-R but CD-RW only sometimes work, many times they don't, seems to depend on who made the disc. As usual the actual detail of whose cd's do work has escaped my mind
2001 Non multiplexed model.

Try burning the disks at the slowest speed possible on your pc then there is more chance of them working on your head unit.

well as i have a mac.... how about i burn them on that !!
