I have a split in the pipe to the back box,, right by the back box and pug says that the pipe aint changeable, and its linked into the bit with the cat !!!!!! Gonna cost me £700 +

The crack in the pipe is right by the back box on the pipe just after the clip,, its about 3 inches,, is there anything i can get done to save me replacing the whole cat unit section? If anyone replies withing the next 2 hrs then you may just save me a wad of cash ;)

Oh,, and if anyone knows how far back the sensor after the cat is,, that would help,, could i get someone to cut the exhaust section that is split and weld sommink i really dunno ... ??

I live in Herts, if anyone could rec a decent mechanic who specialises in pugs,, woudl also be great,, man for 700 squid surely i could get somming custom done ?

Its been a bad month for my pug,, lots of probs this month,, and if i have to fork out over 700, that may just eb the straw that broke the camels back ;(

Exactly the same think happened to my sister's CC. When she bought it she always said she wasn't happy with the exhaust and it seemed to rattle slightly, but everytime they looked they said it was fine.

When it finally went they said that it was £700+ to replace! They gave her a courtesy car (brand new 206cc SE) whilst they were looking at it, and she eventually (after many calls) refused to bring back their courtesy car until they had fixed hers for free, which they did.

I guess she was lucky though. You might be able to get it patched up cheap at a specialist exhuast garage (eg look for Powerflow dealers) but it's only a temporary fix.

If your car is still under warranty then you have a slight chance of some comeback - get in touch with Peugeot head office, explain all the problems you've had in the past and say that £700 to fix a small crack is unacceptable.. yopu never know your luck!

heh if only it was under warranty ;(

Spoke to headoffice who politely told me that is was my problem, not theirs as cars no longer covered by warranty.

I am going to take it down to a local mechanic and see if he can do something with it. Kwik fit didnt want to repair cos they were unsure where the last Y-sensor was.. there is a sensor after the cat but can anyone tell me how far down it is approx?

Just had a call from pug dealer,, update,, need new backbox as well!

Total cost over 1000 !!!!

If anyone has any suggestions apart from burn it,, then im all ears ;)

Further Update : You may want to make this a sticky!!

Screw 1070 pounds to replace the whole exhaust system ( total cost according to the pug dealer including labour + whole new exhaust system..

I went down to my local kwik fit,, they had a 206 GTI exhaust and the lad there said he wasnt meant to do it, but with a few modifications he could fit the GTI exhaust front and back box and leave the cat in place!!!!

OK heres what he did!!!

He cut the whole exhaust system, just after the Y-sensor after the cat where the pipe changes diameter.. the gti exhaust was trimmed by about 10 mil and slotted over, and the back pipe to the rear box was flattened slightly to fit under the torsion bar on the 2.0 litre version...

I have picked the car up and thrashed it around for 15 miles and its sweet as,, also the end pipe is a little different so makes my car slightly more unique!!! The whole exhaust system looks fine,, it wobbles much less under idle ( my old one wobbled quite a bit even when the car was new)

Toital price???? well 160 pounds!!!!!! ;) ;) ;) oh and plus 1 pound to dispose of your old exhaust!!!!

If your car is out of warranty hell you' d be crazy to go to peugeot!!!!!

If anyone wants to know which dealer I took it to,, then i will let them know,, just mail me at stierney@3mail.com,, i dont know if I should mention the dude that did it, because they arnt meant to do it probably, but I tipped him 50 notes for saving me a wad and hes getting my next order of goodyears ;)

By the way,, pug wanted 160 just for the back box! ;) 800 odd for the section with the cat and the rest labour!!

Im now going to put pen to paper and sent Kwik Fit headoffice a very complimentary letter about the helpfull team in that garage!!!

I just needed to get it changed today, i need my car for my job otherwise Im stranded with no income. It would be nice to have some links off this site for alternative fixes such as this prob which would have been really expensive,, i mean my car has done 40k and is prolly worth 10 grand now, so 1k is a lot to spend on a car of that value. At least i can still go out for a beer cos i just saved myself a crap load of money, otherwise it woudl have been stay in and survive on bread n water this month ;)

It's a rip off at £160!!
If you did some searching on this forum you'd have founf the answer quickly.

Exhaust section costs about £30 and will set you back about £25 to get it fitted!!

Have a look below. Any decent mechanic with a mig welder can cut your existing pipe and shorten the new section by a few inches to fit properly.

yep of course.sorry it wasnt bosal  they do the same for 306s.
the company you want are timax and the part number is PG616Q they do this conversion for the 1.1/1.4/1.6.
it costs £11.17 *v.a.t youwill also need a clamp.
you basically offer it up against the old system, draw a line and hacksaw it off(be just short of the cat)bit of exhuast paste to seal. and you a £1000 bettsa off.
all timax exhausts come with 2 year warranty.so keep your invoice.
hope this is of help.

Thx for the advise, ill know what to do next time,, but I have a nice mid and back box,, been running a few days now, no probs ( I do a lot of miles )

I checked out the exhaustr once it had been removed from the car and tbh it was pretty much rotten at the mid box all the way back to the end.

One Final question,,

I really cant work out why Pug would not make the cat a seperate section of the exhaust. IS this just an underhand way of making money out of people when their exhausts fail? Probably a stupid question, but I am no expert,, Im sure in my old car the cat was sold as a seperate unit to the exhaust, not part of the whole from section

Reap could probably hazard a good guess, but if its anything like the washing machine manufacturers, then yep, its a moneymaking scheme.

Plumber: You need a replacement part, they're £15
Me: Great! Order me one!
Plumber: Erm..can't. Due to it being a commonly breaking part, this part is now part of a bigger part. Cost £120 +labour

Serious washday blues :(

Apparantly according to the responce that Peugeot gave to the SMMT when I got them to investigate this same thing "Peugeot receive the CAT and intermediate section as one peice therefore there is no way of selling them seperately"................even though they can on other 206 models as seen in the repair section (which I also pointed out to the SMMT but as it is not an official Pug page it doesn't hold much weight). I still think it is down to profiteering and extortion. Isn't there some rule that companies have to make cars a certain percentage recyclable these days, the inability to supply a cheap bit of tube without a £300 box filled with platinum and other precious metals defies this in my mind. It would simply be a case of Pug turning round to their supplier and saying "give us the tube without the cat" and the supplier would issue it, but that would be doing Pug out of a ruck of cash and making them helpful.

Heh,
I bet they flog the old cats to a company to 'recycle' them and get a nice wedge for themselves..

I was wondering if anyone has actually had a Cat unit fail and how many miles they had done and how old the vehicle was, ? Those things get damn hot very quickly. I literally had my engine running for 30 secs, and it was roasting.

I just hope that section doesnt corrode as fast as the exhaust pipes further back,, my cat unit was a fair amount of rust on it,, but it looked in better shape than the rest of the exhaust

hi ya everyone, i dnt no 100% BUT as i work for pug (your all gonna hate me now) they have released a pipe so you dnt have to replace the cat anyone more, all you replace is the rear box and just after the cat you cut it off a fit this new pipe, i know the do it for all gti's just have to check they do it on the 206cc's , this information should be known by your dearler and wouldnt come nowhere near £1070.00 that is just stupid!!

some parts are silly money but there are also well prices parts.

The thing is we a peugeot from my experience never get praised by the public or a thank you mate, was good of you to sort that out for me at that price, and even if we do it never get remembered, BUT if we do something a lil wrong its staright for the jugular (lol) right i am gonna ring pug main office and put a complaint in, your crap you havnt got a clue then this gets remembered for a life time but the previous 10 months that customers been looked after with good prices and good service is never again thought of!

And by the way, all cats are x change parts and we have to send the back to pug or we get charged 50 quid a time if we dnt send them bk within 6 months of buying them so we dnt make any money at all, you prob find we atcually lose money cause cats dnt get sent bk, its a i'll do it tomorrow job cos its a rite pain in the ar*e!!
