Exhaust story.... what a joke....

Having read that many people have had the same shock we have had when the central box of the exhaust seperates itself from the back box - and have been quoted iro Â£1000 from a peugeot dealer to replace - I thought I'd post what happened in our case....

As mentioned, the central exhaust had 'sheared' with very little warning from the back box - seriously affecting driveability. A call to Viking Basingstoke and they were !00% insistant that the whole exhaust had to be replaced for a cost of Â£1000 - as its a one piece exhaust.... (ive posted my thoughts on Viking Basingstoke dealership under the dealership forum)

Anyways - a call to Topgear in Basingstoke and they said they could do a cat to back stainless steel system for Â£325.... that calmed me down a bit...

Then 3 phonecalls to three diff kwikfits (who i normally wouldnt touch with a bargepole) and i eventually found myself speaking to someone who knew what they were talking about.

Anyways - the long and short of it was we were lucky - our system had obviously been replaced by the previous owner and was now a 4 part system rather than the original 1 piece system - therefore for the central and back box the total cost was Â£128.

The other point is - that if you have the 1 piece system - you can still have the whole system replaced at a kwikfit for iro Â£400 - quite a saving on Â£1000! That system would be a 4 piece system - so the next time the exhaust or part of the exhaust goes you dont have to fork out Â£400 again. Im not sure if a peugeot dealer would replace the whole system with a 1 piece again or a 4 piece for Â£1000

But for a considerable less amount of money and 3yr guarantee - I'd still opt for an aftermarket exhaust system out of shear principle.

Either that - or the stainless steel option - whichever floats your boat.

Anyways just our experience - Hope this is helpful to anyone else with a similar prob.

I had mine replaced in January in Newbury, took just on an hour at the local Peugeot dealer and they used a new repair pipe from the cat to the back box so the repair pipe does exist. All in including repair pipe backbox and fitting 488, made my 200 mile drive home a lot more comfortable though.

200 miles? Blimey...

I assume there wasnt a dealer closer that would lay claim to knowledge of / being able to use the repair pipe?

There was but I work 200 miles away from where I live and it went whilst I was away at work.

I was lucky on my car. due to it being at a Peugeot garage for 40 days in its first 2 years they replaced mine free 2 months before the warranty ran out. Guess I should expect a big bill in another 3 years.
