I picked up on one of the other threads that some people were getting misleading oil levels from the sensor on the dashboard. I though mine must be wrong too, but no, my engine really is burning that much oil! The level seems to be dropping every day, but maybe I'm just being paranoid.
I'm planning to top the level up and see how long until it needs topping up again, would be useful if I knew whether it was normal or not. How often does everyone else need to top up their oil? While I'm at it, which is the best oil to buy, I've had a look in the handbook and it seems to name about ten, what's the difference?! (Sorry, bit of a girlie question )
I was hoping for some sensible replies here as I rang the dealer today and was told that Peugeot don't consider it a problem unless you burn more than a litre in 1,000 miles! That's a lot of oil! I reckon my car's got through half a litre in the last 1,000 miles but only about a quarter of a litre in the previous 7,000 miles.
Please help someone!

Rachel, I'm no mechanic but dispite what Peugeot say, your car really shouldn't be burning any, or hardly any oil from an engine which is nearly new in my experience. In fact it really should stay pretty well constant through your first services as Derek says.
Assuming you haven't a gasket seal leak (and it may be worth just checking the top, side of the engine, and underneath the bottom of the car for any obvious oil leaking - if not already done so) I can only think of a leaking sump screw or worse scenario, a damaged/worn piston ring letting that much oil by.
Anyway, I've bought a litre of oil and will top it up so I can see how much it is burning then go and sit at the dealer until they stop treating me like a dumb blonde!
I can't comment on Pugs yet, but my Fiesta has lost less than 0.5l in total so far, despite my driving
There was no discernable oil loss up to the second service (20k). Since I'm going to sell the car in a couple of months when my SE (hopefully) arrives, I decided to do an oil change. Current mileage is just under 29,000 and the oil was just above 'min'.
Since I never check the oil, it can't have lost more than 0.5l in 9,000 miles assuming the oil was changed at the 20k service.
Based on this, I'd say that 1 litre every 1000 miles implies a MAJOR problem, and a new engine should be losing hardly any at all.
