My 2001 1.6cc recently started to have intermittent starting problems. usually starts ok first time, but if stalled, may not re-start. Quite scary. If left for an indeterminate amount of time it will re-start. Engine warning light came on permanently after 2nd no-start.

Took to a garage diagnostic report said:

Ignition integrated phase detection - intrmittent fault
Engine ECU permanent fault
Motorised butterfly, short circuit to earth permanent fault

Garage did not think anything wrong so re-set and charged £76.

Problem recurred a week or so later and engine warning light on again. Otherwise car is running fine.

Took to a different (recommended) garage. First diagnostic indicated faulty throttle - replaced at cost of £64. Went to pick up car - tried starting twice in succession - did not start second time. Told probably ecu. Second diagnostic indicated battery fault - replaced. Problem exists. Told must be ecu.

Has anyone else had this problem? Not convinced replacing ecu will be the cure. This mechanic came highly recommended and my local pug dealer is absolutely the worst, but I am wondering if I really ought to take it there?

Now just want to repair car and sell!
