Hello all,

I am new to this forum and thought you good folk could give me some advice. I have 1600 206cc pug (2001) and just love it.... however today the husband started it up and it made an ungodly racket .. which subsided within a few minutes. He is saying it sounds like bearing rattle and although the oil is 'all good' he wonders whether this could be the NRV in the oil pump faulty... thats if it has one of course..

is this a known pug thing or just a likely wear and tear issue???

Any suggestions would be great..

There is another recent post on a very similar subject.

Could yours be the fan?

If not, did your oil pressure warning light stay on, on your dash?

A thread on oil pressure:

thanks for that swift reply, man - interesting reading with an object lesson for us all!! There are wee tricks to these continental cars; for example, we've bought a Megane Scenic - I know I know!! - and I changed the oil after a major lesson in where to buy tools, specifically the drain plug spanner!! - and didn't know about the little compressible copper washer which needs replacement at the same time, hence the oil drips on the drive which drove me nuts until the wee man at the Lucas outfit here in Jersey asked me if I'd replaced it! Penny dropped, problem solved!

My feeling on the engine rattle is that it's oil starvation when left parked for any length of time; the oil from the top of the engine drains back through the system. I know it's not the cooling fan as I've had that before in various vehicles - we lived in the back country in NZ - and I have heard the 'death rattle' of a worn engine before... a number of times!! There could well have been a bit of piston slap there as well, but I was so surprised by the racket that I never looked at the oil light - typical!

So, the question is, what are these engines like to work on? I've done my time repairing recalcitrant cars and really have no desire to strat again especially as I don't have any of my tools over here. Are they an expensive motor to have repaired by a garage? Or do I just start the wee thing every day and keep the oil in the top of the engine?

On the whole, though, it's a great little machine with tons of snot over 1800 rpm, loads of style and a size which here on Jersey is ideal!!

If your oil light is not staying on I'd give it an oil and filter change if the oil has been in it for more than a year. Use Total Quartz 5w-40 Fully synthetic oil and a genuine Peugeot oil filter. You'll probably see (or hear) an improvement.

I wonder whether the racket could have been the starter motor remaining on and staying engaged?

As for Renaults - good engines - iffy electrics and plastic bits. Or my old Espaces were anyway.

As for the copper washer, I think we've all done that.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Thanks for the welcome, man and any advice dispensed is always welcome as well!!

So, I'm not the only one caught by the evil copper sump plug washer, eh; I don't feel quite so stupid now: I've rebuilt many engines and repaired many other car problems and felt like a right berk when that little gem was made apparent....

Yep, oil change, you say even though the car isn't due it's service just yet; it has been assiduously maintained by its previous owner??

I'm starting to wonder if I wasn't imagining things as I started the car yesterday and no problem, so hey-ho, and on we go!!

Still a great wee fun car though....

If the oil is still in good condition and the filter was renewed less than a year ago then they should be fine. I just feel that the 2 years or 20,000 miles specified in the Service Manual is stretching things a bit. I'm a bit old-fashioned where servicing is concerned, having been brought up on side-valve engines. I believe that fresh oil is cheaper than a new engine.

Anyway, your problem seems to have disappeared - hopefully for good. Let us know if it recurs.

Did you notice this again,

http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/viewtopic ... 27#p104627

Turned out to be a faulty, worn out fan motor.
