HELP ME PLEASE!!!

hiya i need help....got my car 3 days ago and its been fine no problems whatsoever....just today. checked my engine oil and it was quite low, below the minimum mark. so i bought some engine oil and drove home. on the way home the engine light on the dashboard popped up. didnt know what to do so drove home anyways, just topped up my engine wiv oil to the maximum mark, but the light still comes on when the engine is on. should i wait till tomorow and check again or is this a completely different problem

You had no warning lights before did you?

So the only thing that has changed is that you've put more oil in it, yes?

Could you have over-filled it? It sounds a possiblility.

Check the oil level with the car standing on level ground, and before you have started the car. (If you've been running the engine and then check the oil level then it can give a falsely low reading because not all of the oil will have drained down into the sump yet).

Finally, what oil did you buy?

The light came on before I put oil in it. I bought total 10W40 from halfords I was told that would be best. Ill check it on level ground n see

took it to the garage just now....he checked everything with his computer thingy, and there are no faults or anything so he cancelled the warning light, he thinks it myt be because the car is due a service in a bit thats why its acting that way. ill jus keep driving it and see if anything changes. hopefully not
