Kenwood bt50u
I have used correct stalk adaptor pc99-x23 and patch lead but, with or without new leads the stereo will not come on without the key turned and the ignition on and keep losing my radio settings when I restart the car. Unlike the old factory model it stayed on for an hour
I’m under the impression maybe the live wires need to be swapped round on the power loom which ones have no idea ?

Try swapping the red and yellow leads that come from the stereo's lead. You should be able to unplug them and swap them.
One is for power, the other for memory backup.
I had to do that when I fitted mine.
