Steering Fault - Dangerous

Problem with steering, hope someone can help? I have just bought a 2001 206 diesel and the steering snatches to the right or left randomely it is very unnerving as all seems well and then it just swerves to right or left, there is no pattern! Have had tracking done and it wont hold the tracking, a friend said he thought it was a drive shaft bearing causing it. There is no noise to suggest mechanical fault and the car doesnt crab. I cant understand why the fault is intermittant. any Ideas would be greatly appreciated, many thanks
