Odometer display

Hi, the mileage display is iffy, one of the numbers does not display and it's really annoyng me. When it was MOT'd prior to my ownership the mileage on the MOT states "unable to read".What I would like to know is (as i've heard it's the latter) - is the milege stored in the binical display or in the cars ecu as I would like to replace with the same/similar mileage being displayed. car is 2001 CC 2.0ltr

I can help to narrow this down a little bit - the mileage ISN'T in the ECU.
It's either in the instrument cluster or the BSI.
I know this because before I got my car (which had a burnt out wiring loom), the place that I bought it from put the instrument cluster and BSI into another CC to power it up and check the mileage.
My hunch would be that out of the 2, the mileage would be stored in the instrument cluster, but I can't verify this at the moment.

Right - got another speedo with very similar mileage on it and fitted yesterday, the mileage is stored in the speedo clock - this is for the 2 plug type and obviously can't say for the 1 plug speedo dash
