Help please urgent speedo problems

Post by Shellh »

Hi I'm new here I'm about to buy a 206cc tomorrow morning, it's a 2002 model, ive just come off the phone with the guy just to check all still ok and he hasn't sold it, anyway car still available but he has said that while driving it today the speedo has suddenly stopped working and is on zero, I have no idea about cars (typical female) at all I'm going alone to look at it/pick it up, the guy reckons it could be a new motor needed which apparently are around £40 off ebay? Does this sound right? After googling and looking through some have said its a sensor behind front brake disks some have said something about the gearbox some have said other things like the battery?? I'm a little confused and now don't know whether to buy it or not and if I do how much and how easy is this to fix myself And how do I do it? He has taken out the stereo today and replaced but not sure if this was before or after the speedo issue?! Or if this could have anything to do with it? Can anyone help me before tomorrow morning please?

If he thinks it's such an easy fix, then get him to do it or walk away.
It could be so many things some costly some not so.
If you are going alone then you have no way of knowing which it is.
Why has he taken the stereo out and what has he replaced it with?
I have no idea about cars (typical female)
It's always better to go with someone else to view as they may spot something you don't or stop your heart ruling your head.
I wrote a buyers guide for the forum which may be of help

Any doubts, walk away. There will be others.
Don't forget you have much less (none?) protection from a private seller than a dealer.

Hi col I don't think he has a clue either tbh, I think he was going by Google from what he's said. The reason he's replaced stereo was because it wasn't working so he's put another in that he had at home, ive had a chat with a friend of mine who is a mechanic unfortunately can't come with mye though as lives a couple hours away from me, but he's told me a few things so at least ive a little bit of a clearer idea now, will have a look at your buyers guide now thanks for your help

To be honest, it's probably worth getting the RAC or AA to inspect it. I would hate you to buy a dud due to inexperiance.
If he hasn't a clue, how does he know it's an easy fix?
As I said- get him to fix it.
If you bought it, I'm guessing you would have to take it to a garage for repair? So why not let him take it for repair? (after all he thinks it's an easy one. Let him put his money where his mouth is)

This could cost a few hundred to sort speedo depending what it is. If you don't know what is the cause, is it worth taking a chance?
Cheers Col.

Walk away. There are plenty of good ones, and relatively cheap at this time of year. No need to buy trouble.
