near side rear window

Post by maisey56 »

Hi everyone. i have an intermittent problem with the rear near side window which is causing a problem with the roof. the window went down ok but when i tried to close it, it seemed to jam. i had this problem twice last year and it just seemed to sort itself out and i forgot about it. however, this year it was more difficult to manually encourage the window to close while using the switch. the front window closes ok. there seems to be something catching the window which is now being 'scrapped' at the edge...any help would be gratefully received. some ne has advised that i put washing up liquid on the window...not really confident that it is the right thing to do???
thanks

Don't use washing up liquid. It contains salt for water softening which will corrode the mechanism. It will also dry out and go sticky which will make matters worse.
It sounds as if the window is misaligned and scraping the gasket so the interior panels will need to be removed so that it can be adjusted. The mechanism could be greased at the same time.
Cheers Col.

Hi Col. many thanks. i have just collected my car following its MOT and i have looked at the window again...there appears to be some lumps and bumps developing under the black trim that is fixed to the window and i guess it must be sticking at this point when i try to close the window since this is where the scrape marks the garage referred to are........ i assume it must be rust under the black trim. and probably why it is worse this year...i was again advised to try washing up liquid. i wont i promise. i assume i cannot remove the trim to see what is underneath...better not i am not very good at any type of DIY :(
Thanks, all the best, Marsly

Hi Col...i should have said that i had looked to see if i could remove the panel to have a little look at the window/mechanism in situ but couldn't see how to? perhaps it will be easier to have a good look at the panel with the roof down....(i can hear.. 'mam-don't touch it'). i assume that if i do manage to remove the panel i will be able to 'run' the window to see just where it is catching??
Thanks, all the best, Marsly

It's a bit of a work up as you have to take out the rear seats first.
Be worth investigating gasket first if it is distorted as you say.
Cheers Col.

If you want to try lubricating it use silicon grease. You can buy it in spray cans which makes it easy to direct to where it is needed. Lubricating the seals has helped other folk who have experienced similar issues with the back windows.

My rear passenger window wouldn't close
Today, the front passenger part would but tear kept
Sticking/Jamming. AA came and put WD40 down
The gap and tried closing opening window umpteen
Times.... No luck it remained down/jammed. I've
Just been to have a go myself and found window would
Fully close ( though reluctant at first) if I used switch to fully
Close entire window, then began opening it by pressing switch but
Stopped closed slightly, opened slightly and so on, which seemed
to 'nudge' the rear window into the right position until fully closed.
Did this several times and worked each time. Don't know if it's
WD40 or my 'trick' but at least it's closed now... Don't know
If this will help anyone.
I'll now have to address issue of boot not staying open so therefore
I can't have too down, quoted £177?? By garage last week!?

I wouldn't recommend the use of WD40 as a lubricant. It is a water dispersant.

What is the problem with your boot? Does it seem too heavy? If so one or both of your hydraulic struts has failed. I'd replace both. Here's how:

Ron (Grandadmonkey) is right. You need new struts.
Cheers Col.

See my post above dated 24 April.
The AA man did right because WD40 will often free things off when they are stuck.
