04 206cc 1.6 allure engine trouble..

Post by Shopinspree »

Hello.. First of all I'd like to say thank you for this forum. Over the last 2 years that I have owned my little Pug I've found this to be more or less a one stop shop for finding the tips needed to take care of my pride and joy.. One month ago had a full service with all new filters and oil also bosh plugs. Had a new cat and full exhaust also new timing belt. The mileage is 31200.

1: The air filter is wet through.. When I look down into the air box I can see water in the opening to the air inlet pipe. I've switched to a pod air filter as it was worrying me that a wet panel filter must be blocking air flow. Is this normal? As I'm new to driving and definitely new to sticking my head under a bonnet I would appreciate any ideas. At the service the guy asked if I'd been driving through deep puddles as he had to clean out the air box. Since popping the new pod air filter on my MPG has gone up from 31.4 to 33.7 a Defoe improvement but unfortunately not fixed my next problem
2: Just to let you know this next and main problem has been going on for about a year with no joy at finding the reason.. I'm sat at lights and pull away in first gear, the car pulls away fine for the first couple of seconds then seems to die off to then come back to life a couple of seconds later.. I've tried to explain this at a couple of garages but just get blank looks lol... Any ideas greatly appreciated

Deacon..

No idea on the first one, and the only thing I can think of for the second (not being fully up to speed on the foibles of the 206 yet) is that the torque reaction of the engine as you pull away is moving a wire somewhere. Clutching at straws, I know, but it sounds like it's cutting out.

That sounds like a distinct possibility. If you post (or PM) the last eight digits of your VIN, I'll post a drawing of the wiring to the engine ECU and the coil pack. You can then waggle the wires while it idles, to see if you can reproduce the symptom.

Or you can just waggle anything connected to the engine, I suppose.

Sounds like someone has at some time been through a puddle a bit deeper that they thought ..

Either that or the air filter cover hasn't been replaced properly. When this happens rainwater gets through the join and soaks the filter. Getting the top on correctly is fiddly and some of the screws are a job to get at to tighten fully.

The top of the gearbox earth lead is a notorious point of failure - my daughter's parted completely through corrosion and wear, so well worth a check.

Any warning lights?

Check inlet air pipes for air leaks
Check throttle body for sticky operation
Cheers Col.

Hello  ... (vin :44191554)

Given all the fuses a good clean after the little Pug Didn't want to go to work yesterday.. Had to call the AA out as the engine was turning over but would die with a splutter straight away.. The kind AA man first thought was no fuel, I assured him I'd only just filled up and after banging the life out of the fuel tank he believed me so then thought the fuel pump wasn't working so stuck his head under the bonnet an had a play with the fuse box and to his astonishment there was life in the old girl.. Been out and had a blast round the M60 and things seem to be OK and she didn't die off at the lights. fingers crossed..
