Had my Peugeot 206 2L HDI 2002 for 4 years ish. Last year it randomly turned all the lights off, door locks went crazy, lost all dash signals and hazards came on whilst driving in the dark doing 70mph on the motorway. Not nice. Towed to safety and completed a BSI unit reset and just occasionally the car would lock the doors but otherwise behaved itself.
Now..... started showing a fault on the display saying ENGINE IMMOBILISER FAULT (EIF) and the car would cut out whatever speed. It did this randomly but the final straw was 4 times on a journey home with no specific time delay to restart. I drove it to our local garage who replaced a box in the steering column and said try that and keep the spare key with me. It faultlessly stopped misbehaving for two whole days and then after a short journey in the rain recommenced cutting out with EIF displayed. I completed a BSI reset to the spare key. It then restarted then broke down EIF displayed with spare key and I drove it to the garage.
They didn't know what to do as they said it sounded like the fuel pump was also not working. It may need an ECU repair which would cost in excess of £300 and that may not be the problem. They ran the battery flat and the car then displayed ECONOMY MODE ACTIVE even with a new battery. Big sigh, running out of hair to pull out.
I towed the car home. Found an amazingly clever company that could reprogramme the ECU not to detect the immobiliser or a coded key and get it out of Economy Mode. Refitted the ECU yesterday with hope but to no avail. The car would still turn over but not start. It also doesn't make the BONG noise it used too when completing a BSI reset. I towed the car over a mile away from home last night as wanted a recovery to a different garage for them to take a look. The fuel pump definitely not working and maybe that was the problem but as I was towed in the dark, only the sidelights would work, no indicators or wipers, the lights would work if I pulled the stick towards me as if I was flashing someone.
I don't know what to do with this car. I spent £100 on the reprogramme of the ECU and the car is only worth probably £600 ish. Anyone have any ideas or advise as to what I should or could do and approx how much. I loved that little car and it whizzed straight through an MOT in Sept but because of these problems I've had to buy another car because I live in the sticks. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
