Hi Guys
Just a quick question.
We have had our Pug for a bout 2 years now, we bought it for the summer but use it a lot. When we first got it I noticed it made a bit of a howling noise when slowing down with the gearbox, when slowing down whilst engine breaking. We initially thought this was a problem with the gear box so we had it replaced, as well as the clutch and clutch forks, seals etc. It sounded exactly the same with the new box and clutch in so we took it back to the garage (who we trust) and they replaced the gearbox for a new one again.... same noise. The garage said it must be a normal sound of the car. The noise goes away when you press the clutch in so it is definately from gearbox. It is only very faint when engine breaking and does not really bother us.. the car drives fab. Just a bit intrigued to know what it is, I have read stuff about gear lash etc but just wondered if anyone else has a similar noise. Many thanks, it's a great forum.

Re: "Howling" Noise
I think it's the clutch release bearing. Lots of cars have a similar noise, but it doesn't seem to matter.

2 and a bit years later...
I have this same howling noise. I just had a new clutch fitted. Surely a new clutch/throwout bearing kit etc suggests it isn't the throwout bearing causing the noise? It'd be a new part, it shouldn't be making suspicious noises like that.
Other symptoms for me, it often refuses to go into 1st gear and when it does, it's stiff. Then, from 1st into 2nd it clunks loudly. Not a crunch, but a clunk. 3rd, 4th and 5th are all fine. This is more evident when cold. Not so bad once warm.
Given that it's gears 1 and 2 that seem to have gone bad, might I have some specific damage such as bad bearings between 1 and 2, as opposed to something like the throwout bearing which wouldn't be dependent on the gear?
Is it possible the garage damaged the gearbox when changing the clutch? Should I take it back to the garage? Maybe they could diagnose it. In any case, I don't want to pay any significant amount of money for this after just having paid 490 for the clutch...
Thanks in advance for your suggestions/advice
George
EDIT:
- noise when moving in gear (input shaft spun due to wheels turning)
- noise with clutch up/engaged (input shaft spun by engine)
- silent when clutch pressed with car in neutral (input shaft stationary)
- difficulty getting into 1st, clunks into 2nd.
- pitch changes with engine revs.
--- next i'll test if there's noise when in gear and stationary (input shaft stationary. That will tell me if the noise is coming from the clutch/throwout bearing or the input shaft)

Re: "Howling" Noise
Difficult to imagine how gearbox could have been damaged by clutch replacement. Could be a damaged 1-2 selector if they are the only gears affected. Did they replace release bearing guide tube? It can cause notchy clutch operation if they didn't
Cheers Col.
