Various random issues

Post by SiHolmes »

Hi Guys,

Any common factor in all of these symptoms that have appeared in the last couple of days?

ABS problem, ESP/ASR not functioning
Airbag Failure
Seatbelt warning, even though not moving
Remote refusing to unlock the car

I can't believe all these have gone at once, car barely does 3000 miles a year, wondering if it's electrical. Battery? BSI?

This is a 2004 2.0 Allure, not had any issues for a year or more.

Cheers

Si

The electronics are sensitive to low voltage. Try putting the battery on charge - if you use a good quality charger, e.g. this one, you don't need to disconnect the battery.

I agree with Ian - this is classic electrical.

Most common / likely cause is low battery. Places like halfords will offer a battery test service to tell you the overall health of your battery and if it warrants replacing or not.

Cold weather does tend to expose weak batteries, so as we've officially hit winter it might be no surprise batteries start to come up duff - although you may be not so exposed to this issue on Jersey.

If it isn't the battery itself you can check that the terminals are clean and free of muck and gunk, they do fur up over time. Its not uncommon for places to put a bit of grease on the terminals which attracts muck over time. A bit of emery cloth or wire wool round the terminals and clamps to clean them up can help. Otherwise check your earth points for corrosion and clean as required.

As Ian suggests - i'd start with battery though.

Totally agree. Sounds like a battery at the end of its life. If you do replace with a new battery please make sure you get the right one. Most 206cc's take a 190mm tall battery. Hatchbacks use a 175mm tall battery. Don't get it wrong.

Make sure you follow the correct disconnection / reconnection procedure specific to the 206cc.

Thank you all for your feedback.

I haven't been clear enough of Christmas spirit to go near the car for the last couple of days, but I'll start with the battery first once I emerge from the festive stupor.

Happy Christmas to you all.

Seasons greetings,
What is it about the battery height (175mm vs 190mm) that is the problem?
Is it a physical thing? IE. height?
I ask because, a 190mm high battery is normally a 175mm device in a 190mm shell.

Cheers,
Iain.

If you use a 175mm tall battery in place of the correct 190mm tall one then it places strain on the terminals and can cause connectivity problems as the car is driven.

Hi,
Thanks for that.
I asked because I have yet to find a battery in this battery footprint that had any power/energy differences, short term (CCA) and long term (Ahr). i.e a 175MM high is the same as a 190mm high. They weigh the same..

When I bought my car it had a 175mm high battery fitted and a piece of 4 by 1 underneath! Replaced with a correct 190mm high.

That all said, there are a lot of 175mm high batteries that surpass the life and power of the 190mm ones if you want to drive with a piece of 15mm packing material under the battery! I'm happy with the 190mm one.

Cheers,
Iain.

I was hoping to come back and tell you what the problem was, and how I fixed it. What actually happened was that I left it sitting on the drive for 4 days, then turned it back on, and every single error had disappeared. Still not tried it on PP2000, but for 3 weeks now I've been driving it with no issues. I'm hoping I've got myself a self repairing car...

Good news

If you don't use it much, I'd suggest giving the battery a periodic charge. Batteries don't react well to lack of activity. I have a 25 year old Suzuki which only comes out on very sunny days, and it was chewing through batteries every other year. I fitted an isolator to the earth terminal and it gets a 3 monthly charge, and no further problems.

Unfortunately, isolators are not practical with modern cars, especially Peugeots with the involved BSI reboot procedure, but I think a fortnightly charge should do it.
