Hi Guyz 'n Gals, not been on here for a while, but now my beloved baby is ill!!!
Car is currently with the monkies, due to a pinking problem. They have changed the anti-knock sensor, the plugs and done various software downloads and checked the mapping of the ecu to no avail. They have involved Pug UK and Pug France for advice and are now talking about replacing the crankshaft pulley flywheel....Took me a moment to see the link between replacing the flywheel and a pinking problem, then realised, maybe, just maybe the flywheel has a mark on it to aid a sensor detect the state of the timing of the engine and hence then the ecu may advance or retard the timing to rectify the pinking. They have even tried octance booster in the fuel, moaning about poor octane levels in bad quality fuel-Subsiquently it still pinks!
Just wondered what the symptons of a faulty/cracked manifold are? And could this be the cause of my pinking problem? Any ideas anyone?

Thanks Lyndon...Has anyone experienced 'pinking' due to a faulty manifold, which has then been cured since replacement? Just trying to give Pug a hand to cure my problem.Thanx

A cracked manifold (if it is leaking to the atmosphere) could cause knock ("pinking") this will cause the Oxygen probe (Lambda Probe) see excess oxygen and weaken the fuel mixture, so much so that the Knock Sensor & ECU will not be able to retard the ignition timing enough to stop it..
(The majority of "cracked manifolds" that are reported/replaced on here are faulty internally)

A dodgy Oxygen probe could cause it as well though..
My upstream probe is on the way out, Cos fuel consumption can be very high some days and Ok the next..
I also had a bad case of pinking last week including poor throttle response, intermitant rough idle and occasional engine stall.. So its gona be replaced under warranty

Note: that lambda sensors in general do "age" and become less effective over time.. Causing increased pollution and reduced fuel economy.. Most people in the know will tell you around 40K miles than have it replaced..

How soon is this likely to happen? (Mileage wise?)

Mine growls when I'm accelerating, is that a symptom?

I wouldn't like to be the one that has to change a manifold!

I was under my car yesterday having a nosey what was under there and as the engine is tilted back at an angle you can't get to the manifold from above and it's pretty hard to get at it from underneath coz the subframe is in the way!!

 Mine too. And it hisses a bit too, like air sucking. When I changed from a 1.6 to a 2.0, I was asked what I thought and the Pug guy said 'it roars doesn't it' so I assume it's normal. Pleeease tell me it's normal! :|

i can't decide if my GTi makes the noise.
It does make a different noise around 2500rpm but it's hard to tell if it's coming from the front or back of the car.

When i start the car with me stood outside still there is an Alfa romeo type sound from the tail pipe....which sounds similar to what it does at 2500rpm.
This kind of says the noise is from the back but i'm not convinced.
It is hard to tell if i have a problem of not.

Don't look for a problem  Mine sounds 'meaty' when I start it too and when I put my foot down, but I think it's normal and I like it like that ;)

If there is a problem and it's not corrected, can it do any further damage?

Dont panic, Esselle

Your car and mine are quite normal

I think we should both stop looking for faults, and enjoy our lovely CC's
