Had a really bad week, first a rabbit crossed my path as I powered up to join the motorway, I stopped but nothing left but a pile of oozing steam.

Then later in the week things got 10 times worse. I was heading away from town on a road with the national speed limit. A cat within a split second decided to try and outrun my slk AMG and crossed its path. I heard the predictably sickly clout under the wheel and by the time I turned round a couple of people had picked it up, one was in tears.

Damn. :(

Caught a blue tit in the windscreen wipers of our Golf on the M5 last winter. Poor little sod, even putting the wipers on fast wouldn't shift him.

And a suicidal pidgeon tried to bird-strike the windscreen in the Golf on the M25 a couple of weekends ago. We braced for impact but he dipped at the last second and caught the leading edge of the bonnet and bounced over the top of the car. What a cloud of feathers, it was like a James Bond smokescreen gadget designed by Bill Oddie. :(
Just because you're paranoid, it don't mean they're not after you.

I should have known to put an explanation after that!

Fortunately/unfortunately depending on your point of view, this is what I hit:

I had a fox run into one of my old cars while stationary and take the end of my numberplate off. Oh and the battery on my 306 when I left the lights on whilst waiting for a mate to come out of work not realising she was doing overtime.

I hit a cat years ago in the street where I used to live :(

It flew about 8 feet in the air and was still twitching so I took it to the vets and they told me it was dead and I'd seen its death throws (sp?). So I put notes through everyone's door and said I'd found a injured cat and taken it to the vets (not only cos I felt really guilty but because I'd hate to have one of mine gone missing and be wondering where they were).

Next day, this couple knocked on my door with a box of chocolates to thank me for trying to save their cat. Ooops. I didn't think I could feel worse but I did - I never admitted it and have since MOVED! :D

Travelling in the country (Out to oil fields) around here you and up 'pressing' many different animals no matter how hard you try not to, especially at night, the list includes

Cats, Kangaroos by the 100s, an Ostrich which put me into hospital for stitches, the main mass of these things is above the bonet height of the Land Cruisers we drive so the thing hit the windscreen before slowing down at all. Wombat (in a VW beetle) which did some damage to the push rods as they are bloody solid, all kinds of birds, echidna, snakes.

I hate hurting animals but it is so hard not to when travelling during the wet season, the animals come onto the graded dirt road and just stay there watching the head lights get closer, you can't veer to the side of the road as your tyres sink in and pull you violently to the side which often ends in a roll over and a fully loaded cruiser doesnt stop as quck as a CC and the wringing the neck technique mentioned in a post above doesn't work too well on a big red kangaroo.

I went to Tasmania for a caving trip once and between Hobart and Launceston there were so many pressed animals that you could see the next one from the last.

This would probably be a great place to live if you like eating 'road tucker'
