The car I had before my CC was an L reg 306 diesel, it didnt have a turbo, and suffered for it when going up hills.

I would steer clear UNLESS it has a turbo.

To be honest though I had it for 10 years and it was a very reliable and economical car. It did approx 130,000 miles (90k of those were mine). It was beginning to show faults, but it was 13 years old by this time.

If it’s a second car, why not go for something a bit more interesting and a lot older. Classic cars are cheap to run, easy to service, very cheap to insure (i.e. MGB V8 insured in East London for £65) and no depreciation. As long as you don’t get something completely obscure parts are readily available as well. There are so many old Mercs, Jags, Triumphs, Peugeots, BMWs or MGs to choose from, is the 306 (fine car that it is) really the one to get?

tiranova,

it's a DTurbo Sport - i wouldn't get a standard diesel.

adrian,

i want a run about car that can take mileage as i do 20k a year on average and don't want to do this in my next car, probably a 307CC as it's gonna cost in the region of £25k modified. this car is a 96 which is older than i was looking for but has only done 49k miles and the condition is immaculate for it's age.

also owned a 306 from feb 98 to may 00 so i like them and this is a 3dr which i prefer as mines was a 5dr.

just considering it the now and din't intend to get one this year but if i did it would stop the CC going over 50k miles before it's sold.

That’s a lot of miles. OK so a classic car may not be the best route to take in that case. I do about 15k and split it 5k in the MG and the rest in the main car, I have never driven a 306 so cant comment on that, but by all accounts it is a good car. So are you saying that the 306 will really be the main car and the 307cc kept for special days and when the sun is out? Good plan but I bet you won’t be able to resist driving the 307cc at every opportunity. ;)

i would use the 307CC for a bit more than that - if it was only sunny days in scotland it would only be a few times a year

would probably use the 307cc for about 10k miles max

For DTurbos make sure that it's been fully serviced (with regular oil changes) and that the cambelt has been changed...

Looks pretty smart though. Are you not interested in getting an HDi instead? A bit more money but at least you'd be looking at a phase 2 or 3 rather than a phase 1, which IMHO look loads better:

i agree matt that the phase 2/3 are much better looking, that's one thing putting me off. the 306 i owned was aphase 2 and i loved ur car matt.

the car in questions has been well serviced and cam belt changed 15k ago so that would have been ok, mot was also done at end of may.

i will have a look to see what else is around. another option is a new or nearly new car that i could keep for 6 years or so so it would justify the extra expense although it's not easy getting a diesel at a cheapish price like petrol and a diesel is my preferred option.

might go out and buy auto trader and see whats in there. i didn't reall want to get the 2nd car this year but if i did i would maybe sell the CC earlier - like very soon altho i woud miss it a great deal
