Sorry to go over old ground guys, but what's the latest opinion on this problem?

I've had my 2.0L 206cc for 4 years since new. Never had a problem with it (lucky me!) but this week I got the above warning and the poor thing was running very lumpy and at one point, told me that the Cat had a problem too. I've read all prev threads, although they seem to be quite old, and it would seem that replacing the tappets is the way to go. But how come they've worked perfectly well for FOUR years, if this is now deemed to be a 'design fault'.

Last question ... do I need to face the horrors of the main dealer - who hates me because I didn't buy the car from him - or can my local Nationwide Centre do this for me?

Really appreciate any advice before doing my 'dumb blonde' act at the garage.

Cheers
Dee

i am getting this error too and I just ignore it. The car runs without any problems. Not only that, its a daft message anyway! If it said "Pollution Fault" then i would be worried!!

But seriously, I did fit a small engine mod to get a bit more HP out of the engine which dies effect the airflow. I didn't get the message immediately but a couple of days later it appeared, but the car runs better and quicker with the mod so i don't care!

Hi Dee,

This goes on a bit but may, if I get a result, in the end save us all a bit of money.

After the earlier thread about this to which I contributed, I've written to Peugeot - our 206CC is about the same age as yours with 27K miles up - and had a half encouraging reply. Armed with a copy of the Peugeot Technical Bulleting, (its here in case you didn't find it http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/modules.p ... pic&t=9519) - the one where they admit the hydraulic followers fitted for a known period of engine manufacture were faulty and the fix is to replace them with those from the 1.8 engine - I appear to have struck something of a nerve with them.

As the bulletin instructs the Pug dealer's service department to first change the coil pack and then, if that fails to cure the problem, change the followers, I laid it on a bit heavy by asking how they can realistically expect customers to stump up over £200 for something which doesn't solve the problem and isn't required and then another £700 - £800 to cure it. After all they have admitted it's a manufacturing fault, haven't they?

Their reply is very detailed on how they look after the customer, respond to technical/quality issues promptly etc. in fact all of the stuff you would expect the customer service/quasi PR dept to say. What is interesting though is that after getting all that guff out of the way, they are mentioning possible financial contribution to the repair and have not denied the existance of the bulletin or queried the contents with me ;)

I have yet to start round 2 (ding, ding) with them but I feel that after a bit of horse trading there may be a compromise in the offing which would obviously be to their benefit as it would forestall me from discussing it in a more 'public' manner.

I'll keep you all posted if I get lucky
