I would agree with you there - wouldn't imagine anywhere in Wales would be any different. I am fortunate to live in a location that is 8 miles from Leeds has not one but two train stations about ten buses an hour into Leeds and is 2miles from the M1 and A1. That is why I live there though. As I get a free ticket to work it doesn't make sense to live anywhere other than next to a train station. It takes 15 minutes to get into Leeds on the train and over an hour by car from here unless you set off at some unearthly hour to beat the traffic. I work in York which is about 20 miles away and my train gets me home in 17minutes.

It very much depends on where you live.

Ok. To get to work takes me 25 minutes in my car to go just over 12 miles.

Public transport would involve the following:

Outbound:
1. Take a bus (which only comes once every 1/2 hour if it feels like it) to the station - 2 miles and about 15 minutes and about £1.50 (or taxi at 5 minutes and £4)
2. Take a train into Paddington - 20 miles or so? and about 35-40 minutes and about £5
3. Take a train out from London (not Paddington so involves a tube ride) - another 20 miles or so (guess time and cost about the same)
4. Take a bus (no idea on time or cost) or taxi (same)

Inbound, reverse the above but use taxi from station to home as bus stops at 17:30.

So instead of less than an hour a day, 25 miles and about £2-3, public transport would take a minimum of 4 hours assuming I walk straight off one onto the other, cost around £20 and take me on about a 60 mile round trip.

And the government wonders why people prefer private transport...

I'd rather be in Slough than Manchester, honestly. No Liverpudlian, could admit to liking Manchester ;)

Exiled, I'm afraid. Once you get offered twice the money you're on, you don't need a lot of time to think about it...

The Metrolink offers a good service and is regular and reliable, however £4.60 for a return trip of 22 miles makes it one of the more expensive forms of public transport.

P.S. My Two-penneth - My girlfriend was born in the shadow of Anfield but now prefers living in Manchester

That's the whole point though.

Whilst people feel the need to rant about public transport, it means it's not doing an effective job. Whilst it's not doing an effective job, people will refuse to use it unless they absolutely have to. Whilst people refuse to use it, others will moan that it's not being used and there's no money for it. Whilst there's no money for it, it won't get better. Until it gets better, people will rant about it which brings us to where we started.
