they do an important and dangerous job but 30k and 40% is a bit much. if that's what you get paid to play pool etc.. as you wait on a fire then sign me up :P

Firemen are the best Volleyball players in the world you know?

Anyway - heres my opinion for what its worth......

If you choose a career in the "service" type of work (ie one where if you did not do your job, peoples lives are at risk) for example, Fireman, Policeman, Ambulanceman, Army, Navy, Airforce, Coastguard, you should FORFEIT the right to strike. I speak as someone currently serving in HM Forces and it was part of my contract when i joined up to waive this right. I feel the same should apply to our emergency services....I have many friends in the military who have been called up to man the armys ageing Green Goddess Fire Appliances, who have been sent away from their homes and loved ones to live in regional TA centres during these strikes. As if they don't spend enough time away anyway (did you know there is still a military presence in the Falkland Islands, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bosnia, Croatia - i could go on)
Anyway - God help any of you if you find yourself needing assistance from the fire brigade during these strikes and a military team with BASIC training comes to assist you.....badly equipped and paid considerably less than these hard done by firemen. If you - god forbid - have an accident in your lovely car and need cutting out, be reassured by the fact that NONE of these military crews will be equipped with cutting gear (the fire brigade have decreed we will not be allowed to use any of their specialist gear - nice one!)
If ever there was a more apt use of the phrase "Don't play with fire" i've yet to hear it.....

Well I think they do a dangerous job and can't believe they get paid so much less than tube drivers. End of my soapbox.

PS And they're so much more georgeous! Yummy :D
